The Technical Meeting entitled Investigating heritage materials with safer ion and photon beam experiments was held in Paris from December 7 to 10, 2015. It was co-organised by the Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France (C2RMF), and IPANEMA (CNRS, Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication), under the aegis of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency). 18 countries were represented with more than 70 international experts from Natural and Human Sciences active in the field of Heritage Science. This Technical Meeting was a follow-up of the Consultant Meeting entitled Mitigation strategies for radiation damage on cultural heritage materials held in 2013 at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

Through keynote contributions, plenary and working group sessions, round tables, and an open conference, the different aspects of radiation damage and its mitigation in Heritage studies have been the core of the meeting. The main topics covered were : classification of radiation-sensitive heritage materials, current practices in radiation analysis of heritage items, monitoring radiation-induced modifications (real-time and long-term), identification of model samples and opportunities for joint testing program and damage mitigation strategies.

As one of the results of the two working groups, specific recommendations for the scientific community have been stated. The main suggestions are to create a common terminology in the matter of radiation damage, enhance exchanges about the specific impacts, integrate international institutions, create guidelines and documentation to be disseminated among specialists and a broader public, and organise formal and non-formal training activities in the field of safer beam experiments in heritage studies.
