Assembly of the PUMA wiggler

publié le

PUMA will use hard X-rays up to a photon energy of 60 keV. To obtain such hard radiation a special insertion device with high magnetic fields (a so-called "wiggler" source) is needed. It will be used as the X-ray source for the PUMA beamline, and simultaneously for the SOLEIL slicing project. This source is currently being assembled by the SOLEIL insertion device group and will be installed in the storage ring in the summer shutdown of this year.

The photo shows one of the magnetic poles of the device during assembly. Special tools had to be manufactured to allow the precise manipulation of the pieces under the influence of very strong magnetic forces. Image courtesy of O. Marcouille, Synchrotron SOLEIL.
