Science and ancient materials at the French Academy of Sciences on July 4th

by Bénédicte Charbonnel - published on , updated on

Emerging research topics, new methodological developments and enhancement of interdisciplinary collaborations between experimental sciences, human sciences and environmental sciences contribute to a deep renewal of research on ancient materials (archaeology, palaeontology, ancient environments, cultural heritage and conservation).

The workshop entitled « Sciences and Ancient Materials » will take place the 4th of July 2017 from 9 am to 7 pm in the prestigious setting of the Grande salle des séances of Institut de France to debate of new dimensions and explore new research prospect of this field of research. This workshop will enable to dynamically present the scientific landscape of the different disciplines of the field of ancient materials, to question practices and to raise the main scientific questions to be studied in the coming years.

The workshop is organized by the Académie des sciences with the participation of the Académie des Technologies, Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres and Académie des Beaux-Arts. It is part of the cycle of events “Frontiers of ancient materials”. The scientific organizers of the event are Loïc Bertrand (IPANEMA), Denis Gratias (IRCP, corresponding member of the Académie des sciences) and Philippe Janvier (CR2P, member of the Académie des sciences).

A particular attention will be paid to the Mediterranean area where cultural heritage scientific challenges cross key societal challenges (study and conservation of cultural and natural heritage, training…). “Frontiers of Heritage Science” cycle of events is supported by the Inter-academic group for development, in line with its mission of mobilising knowledge for co-development. The cycle of event is held in the framework of the setting up of the scientific strategy of E-RIHS, the European Infrastructure for Heritage Science.
