XRD/XRF instrument

The IPANEMA laboratory has an X-ray generator equipped with a molybdenum tube with focusing optics, a 2D detector for diffraction, an X-ray fluorescence detector, a goniometer, and a CCD camera for viewing the sample. The system is housed in a self-protected enclosure.

The equipment is designed to study ancient materials and objects from archaeology, palaeontology and cultural heritage through spot analysis and/or surface mapping using X-ray fluorescence reflection geometry and X-ray diffraction. The size of the objects examined can vary from a few hundred micrometres to approximately 15 x 15 cm². This instrument can be used for pilot studies in the laboratory to determine feasibility before considering, if necessary, measurements at the SOLEIL synchrotron, notamment sur la ligne de lumière PUMA.

The instrument is integrated into the laboratory equipment of the FIXLAB platform of the  E-RHIS France project and will be accessible to external French and/or European users within this framework.

Caractéristiques techniques

  • X-ray source (microfocus): Mo-Target (Ka-Mo = 17.48 keV), spot size less than 50 µm, high-voltage generator (maximum 45kV and 0.9 mA), internal cooling (water circuit).
  • Focusing optics: Model ASTIX-f 120/240, AXO Dresden, beam focusing and Kß-Mo suppression (two mirrors 100 x 20 x 10 mm³), light vacuum pump (MP 030Z). The beam size on the sample is approximately 150 μm (vertically).
  • Set of asymmetrical cross slits oriented at 45°.
  • Motorised goniometric assembly: 4 axes, XYZ translations (model HPS170, PI) and rotation (model PRS-200, PI). Total translation range: 100 mm (accuracy +/- 1 μm), total rotation range: 360° (accuracy 0.0004°) – limited to avoid collisions. Can support samples weighing up to 1 kg.
  • FX detector: Amptek X123-SDD EDX detector, flexible positioning.
  • DRX (WAXS) detector: MAR345 2D (flat image) detector, plate read time < 2 minutes, positioning: variable angle and distance.
  • Sample visualisation and positioning: Basler camera (CMOS colour camera) with Ricoh optics (FL-BC7528-9M), LED lighting, ZABER translation (X-LSMA200-E), laser triangulation (MicroEPsilon IDL1320-25).
