Pint of Science 2025

Pint of Science Festival – 19 to 21 may 2025 – Saclay plateau

Once again this year, IPANEMA staff are involved in promoting science on the Saclay plateau through the Pint of Science festival. The presentations will take place from 19 to 21 May 2025 in various bars, with the aim of promoting science in a friendly atmosphere.

Three events will take place in Orsay

The presentations will begin on 19th May at the Hall of Beer, with an evening entitled “Cryo Clues and Neon Hues: Panic at the Disco”, which will explore the secrets of sea urchin colouring in the presence of Arturo Josué Alaverez Valverde (LCMCP PhD student), followed by Harisa Rista (SOLEIL PhD student), who will attempt to solve a rather unusual case of cell murder with your help.

On 20th May, the adventure continues at the Gramophone with an evening entitled ‘Les aventuriers des données perdues’ (The Lost Data Adventurers), featuring Maxime Megel (research engineer at IPANEMA), whose research focuses on the contribution of mathematics to fossil preservation. Thaïs Wuillemin (PhD student at the Trajectoires laboratory) will follow with a presentation on her work on ancient ceramics and how neural networks can be used to understand how they were made.

The final evening at Orsay, on 21st May, will take place at Le Deck game bar.  Ne will have the opportunity to see science come to life in stop motion thanks to Léna Marty (illustrator and motion designer), who will demonstrate the link between migratory birds and the Northern Lights. Finally, we will play with Félix Metzinger (board game designer), who will present his game on synchrotrons, from its design to its creation… to its real-time testing, thanks to you.

An event will take place in Gif sur Yvette

On 20 May, a parallel evening event entitled “Bacteria: friends, enemies… or both?” at Le Plato bar. Laura Obry (PhD student at the MICALIS institute) will explain how good bacteria can help us fight bad bacteria, which are even resistant to antibiotics. Then we will attend a joint presentation by Celine Borde and Emma Bruder, both post-doctoral researchers at the Collège de France and the Pasteur Institute respectively. They will demonstrate that the famous Escherichia coli (better known as E. coli) is not necessarily a threat, as it can also be our ally.
