Visiting scientist Prof. Dr. Rachel Popelka-Filcoff

As part of a visiting professorship, the DIM PAMIR project TraceRockArt, we are welcoming Professor Rachel Popelka-Filcoff to the Paris-Ile-de-France region. She holds the Rock Art Australia Minderoo Chair in Archaeological Science in the School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Melbourne, where she leads archaeological science initiatives. This project, organized by Lab-BC in collaboration with IPANEMA and Synchrotron SOLEIL, aims primarily to deepen collaboration between France and Australia in the field of the scientific study of prehistoric pigments and their role in the archaeological past.

The presence of Professor Popelka-Filcoff offers an excellent opportunity to exchange experiences on new analytical approaches for the characterization of pigment traces using large-scale equipment and/or mobile devices.

During her stay, Professor Rachel Popelka-Filcoff will give lectures on various occasions:

On July 3, 2025, she will give a lecture at the University of Savoie Mont Blanc in Chambéry entitled “Novel Archaeological Science Approaches to Mineral Pigments”.

On July 7, 2025, a joint scientific workshop on the state of the art of non-invasive analytical techniques for the study of vulnerable traces of rock art pigments will take place at the C2RMF in Paris. Professor Popelka-Filcoff will give two keynote lectures in this context.

On July 11, 2025, Professor Rachel Popelka-Filcoff will give a lecture for the general public at the Quai Branly Museum.

Professor Rachelka Popelka-Filcoff has also been invited to give a lecture as part of the SOLEIL Synchrotron seminar series. This lecture will take place at 2 p.m. in the SOLEIL auditorium.
